Get Married on Mauritius

Choose between a Standard Wedding or an Indian Wedding

Mauritius is a wonderful place to get married.  You can come just by yourselves or bring your family and friends.  Whichever method you choose we will help you with all the formalities and can act as witnesses if you desire.

We can organise the wedding in your house or hotel or you can also get married in a restaurant or in fact anywhere on the island. Tell us what you would like as we have many years of experience in organising weddings here on Mauritius.

If you wish to have some special things organised for this very important day, please let us know and we will make a plan specially for you.

A wedding on Mauritius

Standard Wedding:
Cost with taxi fares and all legal fees Euro 390

Before you leave your home country please send the following papers and information by registered post to us on Mauritius. We need them at least 4 weeks before your marriage date.

  • 2 Copies of the first 3 pages of your passports
  • 2 Copies of your birth certificates in English or French language.  International birth certificates are normally perfect for this.
  • The dates when you will arrive on Mauritius and the dates when you would like to get married.
  • 2 copies of your divorce papers in English or French if one or both of you has been divorced.
We will then write a letter on your behalf to the civil status office on Mauritius stating the date of arrival and the desired date for the marriage. We will send this with all the documents to the main civil status office in Port Louis and this must be at the latest 4 weeks before the ceremony.
  • Before you arrive, we will personally visit the civil status office, the wedding official and the lawyers in Port Louis to make sure that the papers have arrived and everything is alright for your visit.
  • On Mauritius soon after your arrival, we will take you to visit the main civil status office in Port Louis with your passports. After this we will go to the court where you will swear an affidavit that you are single. We will then visit the local civil status office and the wedding official who will marry you.
  • On your wedding day: The officer will come to you and conduct the ceremony wherever you want. This can be in a private house, in a restaurant, in a hotel or even on a beach. The exact location depends only on your imagination and the cooperation of the wedding official. If desired we could act as witnesses for the event.
  • After the wedding, we will take the marriage certificate to the Prime Minister's office to have it validated. It will then be immediately valid when you return home.
Optional extras:
  • Taxi or special car to the place where you will marry.
  • Evening dinner in a hotel or nice restaurant: Most hotels and restaurants can provide you and your friends or family with a dinner to remember.
  • Accommodation for 1 or 2 nights in a top hotel.
  • Photos made by a professional photographer.
  • A video of your wedding.
  • Flowers and bridal bouquet.
  • Simpler style wedding dresses can be made locally by a tailor using cloth brought with you from abroad or bought locally. You should allow at least one week for this as you will need several visits for trying on the dress.
  • Catamaran tour: Why not do a sunset cruise directly after your marriage to look at the beauty of the outer islands?

(Please note that if one of you has Mauritian nationality, or has a residence permit, then the above may not apply. Please contact us for more details).

Indian Wedding
Cost with taxi fares and all legal fees Euro 1200.
(includes the standard wedding)

In your hotel or holiday house, you will change into your Indian marriage clothes, the bride will have her hands henna painted, will be made up and have her hair done ready for the ceremony.

You will then be transferred by car to the Maha -Kalee Tamil temple in Port Louis where a welcome prayer (Aartee) will be performed and camphor is burned on a tray to chase away evil eyes. The civil status officer will then hold the civil wedding ceremony (see standard wedding above).

You will then mount on the podium for the Tamil wedding ceremony Kalianam and the official priest Aya Baba will perform the following prayers or Poojas:

Exchanging the Varmala (Garland) is the sign that marks the start of the marriage. Wedding Garlands are exchanged and represent the bride and the groom. By exchanging the garlands, you share your love with one another. Today the flowers are as fresh as your feelings, however as time goes by, the flowers will wither and dry up. Your mutual feelings will however remain fresh in your hearts forever.
A typical Mauritian party will then be held, where nice Mauritian cakes are served along with sparkling grape juice.

The following is included in the price:

  • Traditional Tamil Wedding outfit for the bride and groom, including the hire of Indian jewellery.
  • Henna painting of the bride's hands, the hairdresser and an Indian style make-up for the bride.
  • A photographer who will give 50 photos (10/15) in an album and the negative film.
  • Assistance with the registration and certification of the marriage. We can also provide a translation into German at an extra price.
  • Arrangement of some Indian sweets and drinks after the ceremony.
Optional extras:
  • Evening dinner in a hotel or nice restaurant: Most hotels and restaurants can provide you and your friends or family with a dinner to remember.
  • Accommodation for 1 or 2 nights in a top hotel.
  • A video of your wedding.
  • Catamaran tour: Why not do a sunset cruise directly after your marriage to look at the beauty of the outer islands ?
